One of our biggest tips on downsizing is to be ruthless and resist taking all of your current possessions with you. The chances are you won’t have room in your new home to take all your belongings. Give old clothes to charity and try selling electrical items and furniture on websites like Gumtree and Ebay, or your local car boot. Likewise, you could pick up a bargain from others too, especially if you’re going to need reduce the size of your sofa or dining table.
Maximise space using effective storage
You may still be tight on space in your new home, following a thorough clear out, so think about making the most out of clever storage. In small rooms, try using vertical cabinets to avoid taking up limited floor space.
