General Election – will it affect your move?

1

The UK General Election is only days away, so you may be wondering how the outcome might affect your moving plans this year.

Elections can affect the property market but this is usually when a significant policy change is announced, which isn’t the case this time around.

According to Rightmove 95% of home-movers say the general election will not affect their moving plans.

“We anticipate that housing market activity will remain steady in the lead-up to the July election, based on previous patterns leading up to the 2015 and 2019 elections. This is supported by the current attitude among the majority of home-movers, who remain determined to go ahead with their plans to secure their next home this year.” Rightmove, May 2024

Rightmove’s property expert Timothy Bannister said: “Previous elections indicate we may be set for a strong summer of home-moving activity once the election is over, especially if interest rates start to fall. However, every election is different, and it would depend on whether any significant housing policies are also introduced, so we’ll need to wait and see what happens to have a better view of activity for the rest of the year.” “
